Forum: GratefulDead Subject: The myth of the 300

I've noticed a couple of references lately to the fact that some threads garner 200-300 views. This is taken by some as evidence of an invisible army of lurkers on the threshold who would just love to be taken into the warm embrace of our discourse, if it wasn't for the sarcastic assholes putting them off...

Frankly, that army doesn't exist. 300 views of a topic are not 300 unique views. I'm sure many of us look at thread openers more than once, for example if we want to go back and follow the way the thread has changed since we last looked, or we want edit something we said earlier. That's where the big numbers come from - multiple views by the same old cast of regulars.

Sure we pick up a new voice every now and then but I really don't think the bus is about to be swamped by a horde of jostling passengers any time soon - no matter how sweetly we wave from the windows.

Like most other things you'll notice this is, or has become, a complete waste of everyone's time. Still - what else were you planning to do with it?

Okay, 500, but no more...

UPDATE II:

So, Rob, the answer, if we can believe it, appears to be roughly 100 ind views in six hrs on a given Friday afternoon and evening...unless someone was dicking around with us...

Are you telling me that you are going to be the FIRST, the first, to get to 600 views by the time you log on again?

I find that amazing. And the fact that this is keeping my attention is even more amazing.

Greetings, William! I trust you're well today.

This thing has become a monster - it's going to log so many hits that it'll send the Archive into meltdown and I shall be for ever villified, a fugitive dog to be hunted down in the street. Why, oh why did I do it?? My mother told me I'd regret being such a smartass...

I am, indeed. A Saturday morning and evening if we share; what a great combination.

And yet, fearing degradation--dropping into the abyss of a simple conversation, I will keep it short.

It's funny, but I think we all feel a bit guilty about this addiction.

Damn, you've found me out. I really have 23 different poster names and account for about 80% of all views, sometimes looking and posts over and over so as to pump up the numbers, makes it look more important, kind of like the body counts in Vietnam.
Seriously, I agree with you. The number of "hits" does not reflect the actual number of different individuals who have looked at a post, but I do see it as a reflection of the interest generated by the original thought. Even if it is a small core number that keep pulling up the same thread, a large number of "hits" reflects that the post is seen as being particularly important/funny/relevant/intriguing/offensive/threatening - whatever; it stands out to the readers.

I usually catch up on threads by clicking "Grateful Dead" in the forum column-
makes it all rather easy. So every time i re-read a post it adds yet another view number?

Very good, very good...the 77 references were waning...

I am not sure if it is sarcastic, though that is in the mouth of the speaker, or ironic, and that is in the nature of the semantic relations, so I will conclude it is just funny.

And I thought it was about the Spartans that defended Dancin at the gates of Golden Gate Park from the attacks of the insensitive humor driven mongrel hordes...

Anyhooo--yes, absolutely right, my friend. It is often the case that during an exchange I will singlehandedly accumulate 30 views on a subject if it is a slow day, and I engage in a back and forth with 3-5 forumites. Seriously.

Unless someone explains me how to go directly to a response, to avoid this, I dare say that the number of views is almost meaningless...

Mindless chatter? I'd be very offended if it weren't true. If we aren't getting all worked up over a rather insignificant item, we're taking someone's post and taking it to places better left unvisited. But we do occasionally discuss matters of substance, occasionally.
Good to hear you check in. Despite the somtimes cantankerous nature of the discussions here, please do chime in when you feel the need, the more the better.

Do we each get our own membership card in the A-Hole Club?

Question: If one does in fact have their had firmly implanted up their ass (I believe Cranial Rectosis is the medical term), would that disqualify them from membership in the A-Hole Club? Does membership require that the A-Hole be free and clear of any obstructions? Or, is it a requirement, since no true A-Hole can exist with his head not plugged up his nether region?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Note to Mr. Bagel: This is a good example of a thread gone bad.

But to answer your question: free and clear at all times to permit the free flow of self-expression common to the breed.

Let's just say that in my field, late December and early January are about as dead as it gets. Most of my time is either getting ready for meetings, being in said meetings, summarizing the meetings for those not in attendance and planning the next meeting.
How does stuff actually get done? Not really sure.

I was wondering who books all these damn meetings I've been in the last few weeks. Had I known I can get the absentee notes from you I would have spent my time reading, posting, and offending more posters. With your notes I'll be a 74% more effective a-hole...and then soon inducted and a card carrying member of the Society of A-Holes. Thanks SDH!
